뜨거운 99년 여름, 18세의 영선과 선경은 내기를 한다. 여름방학 동안 누가 더 재미있는 여름을 보내는지. 선경은 깜짝 놀랄 일을 할거라고 자신만만하지만 영선은 엄마, 아빠와 함께 바다에 가야 한다고 말한다. 드디어 바다로 떠나는 날 아침, 영선은 우울하다. 자신의 기분에만 취해있는 엄마와 말이라곤 통하지 않는 아빠. 아무튼 세 가족은 바다로 떠난다. 하지만 인적이 거의 없는 어느 도로에서 고물차는 고장으로 멈춰 선다. But Young-sun does not have any excitement or expectation for this summer, even though she is supposed to go to the beach with her parents.)연출의도. 고교 시절의 외로움, 가족간 의사소통의 단절, 그리고 성장. 이런 것들을 여름여행이란 이야기를 빌어 나타내고 싶었다. 뜨거운 태양 아래 한쪽 어깨를 축 늘어뜨린 채 걸어가는 여고생의 뒷모습을 보며, 그녀의 여름을 상상해 보았다. 그때를 돌이켜보면 우린, 큰 것을 원하지는 않았던 것 같다. 자그마한 일상에서의 탈출구. 그런 것들이었다. 그런 탈출구들이 모여 우린 성장해 가는 것이다. (This film is about loneliness, lack of communication (between family members), and growing up (coming of age) through the story of a summer trip. I saw a high school student who crossed a wide playground alone, drooping her head down. She reminded me of my high school days and there I imagined her summer. Thinking of those days, I was satisfied with small things and looked for an escape from boring everyday life. However, it wasn't easy for me to find it. Even though I was thirsty for friendly affection, parents' love, and so on, I always k .new the truth: I am all alone. And that used to make me sad.)
