덕지덕지 쌓아 올린 낡은 건물들이 모여 있는 가난한 도시에, 한 페인트공이 지겨운 표정으로 페인트 칠을 하고 있다. 오전 무렵 그곳에 사는 가난한 화가가 일어나 그림을 그리기 시작한다. 페인트공은 화가를 보면서 한심함을 느끼지만, 온종일 그림에 집중하는 모습에 호기심을 갖게 된다. 다음 날도 화가는 그림을 그리고 페인트공은 페인트 칠을 한다. 페인트공은 무료함을 달래보려고 벽에 나무를 그리다가, 화가가 잠시 자리를 비운 사이 그의 그림을 훔쳐보고 덧칠을 하게 된다. 자신의 그림이 달라진 것을 눈치 챈 화가는 그림을 던져버린다. 집으로 돌아온 페인트공은 한때 그림을 그렸지만 지금은 페인트공일 뿐인 자신의 현실에 안타까움을 느낀다. 한편 화가는 던져버렸던-페인트공의 손길이 닿은- 그림을 다시 주워 온다. 다음날 페인트공은 전날 그려 넣은 담벼락 위의 나무에 액자가 그려져 있는 것을 발견한다. (In a poor city filled with old, patched-up buildings, a painter is wearily painting a building's wall. Sometime in the morning, a poor artist who lives in that building gets up and starts painting a picture. At first, the painter looks at the artist with disdain but as he continues to look at the artist who wholly concentrates on his work, the painter eventually becomes curious. The next day, the artist keeps on painting his picture and the painter continues to paint the wall. The painter paints a tree on the wall to relieve his boredom. Then, when the artist goes away for a while, the painter secretly looks at the artist's work and paints over it. When the artist comes back, he notices that his picture is different and he throws it away. The painter comes home and mourns his reality ? he once painted pictures as an artist, but now he's a painter who paints the walls. Meanwhile, the artist picks up the picture that he threw away ? the one that the painter painted over ? and comes back home with it. The next day, the painter discovers that a frame is drawn around the tree that he had painted on the wall.)연출의도. "두 사람은 같은 공간에서 만나 비슷한 일을 하며 하루를 보낸다. 페인트공은 현실을 위해 붓질을 하고, 화가는 자신의 꿈을 위해 붓질을 한다는 것이 다를 뿐이다. 현실과 이상의 대척점에 선 페인트공과 화가- 둘 중 누구의 삶이 더 올바른 선택일까? 정답은 없다. 하지만, 가지 못한 길에 대한 미련은 누구에게나 남아있을 것이다. 나는 그 미련을 ‘일상 속 판타지의 영역' 으로 만들어 보고 싶었다. 페인트공과 화가, 두 사람의 마음 속 미련이 ‘빌딩의 벽' 이라는 공간을 만나 나무를 만들어내고 그 나무를 하나의 조촐한 예술작품으로 승화시킨다.둘은 모두 현실에서 일탈했지만, 자신의 자리를 떠난 것은 아니다. 둘은 서로를 조금씩 이해하고 소통하게 된 것이다. (The two meet in a same place and spend their day doing similar things. The only difference is that the painter paints for his reality and the artist paints for his dream. The painter and the artist represent the polar opposites of reality and ideal ? whose choice is the right one? There is no right answer. However, everyone has some regrets over a certain path that he.she never took. I wanted to represent that regret as the realm of ‘everyday fantasy'. The painter and the artist ? the regrets in both of their minds meet at a ‘wall of a building' to form a tree, and sublimate that tree into a small artwork. Both have briefly departed from their realities but have not left their positions. The two have started to understand each other and communicate bit by bit.)
