열 여덟 살의 살인범 Keith는 약에 취해 있었다는 이유로 감옥이 아닌 정신병원의 격리 병동으로 보내진다. Keith를 기다렸다는 듯이 격리병동에 수감되어 있던 전직 남창 Leonard는 탈출을 제의한다. 도시로 탈출한 Leonard는 그의 정부를 만나 몸을 팔고 남쪽으로 도망치기 위해 필요한 돈을 마련한다. 도시를 떠나기 전 Leonard는 Keith를 재미있는 곳으로 데려가겠다며 약의 여왕(Drug Queen)의 집을 찾아간다. Ash가 제공하는 여러 종류의 약을 복용하고 취해버린 세 사람, Keith의 살인장면이 그의 환상 속에 나타난다. 서둘러 Ash의 집을 나서는 Leonard는 목적지를 묻는 Ash에게 Rio De Janeiro라는 수수께끼 같은 대답을 남긴다. 갑작스레 누이 Lenore를 방문하겠다는 Keith에게 Leonard는 가야할 길이 급하지만 그의 제안을 거절하지 못한다. Rio De Janeiro 가 어딘 지를 묻는 Keith에게 Leonard는 확실한 답변을 주지않고, Lenore는 누이라기보다는 연인 같은 모습으로 Keith를 반긴다. 그들이 사랑을 나누는 동안, Lenore의 집 앞에 조급한 듯 서있던 Leonard는 그의 정부의 남편에 의해 갑작스럽게 살해당하고, 그 순간 침대 위에 자는 듯 누워있는 Keith의 시체를 붙잡고 Lenore는 오열한다. 격리병동 내에서 약물과다 복용으로 인해 급사한 Keith와 Leonard의 시체를 간호사와 의사는 차가운 눈으로 바라보고 있다. 그들이 끝맺지 못한 환상 속의 탈출을 비웃듯이. (Keith is 18 years old murderer but he is sent to a mental hospital instead of a prison because he was on drugs. As if he was waiting for Keith, Leonard, a former hustler, offers him to escape from the isolation ward. They go to a city and Leonard sleeps with one of his clients to earn some money. Before leaving the city, Leonard takes Keith to the house of Drug Queen. Ash offers different kinds of drugs and they all drugged out soon. In his fantasy, Keith sees his killing. Upon leaving, Ash asks Leonard where they are headed and his answer seems mysterious ? Rio De Janeiro. Keith insists on seeing his sister, Lenore, before heading to the destination and she greets Keith as if they are lovers. While Keith and Lenore make love, Leonard is killed by the husband of his client. At that moment, Lenore cries out for the death of Keith. In the isolation ward, nurses and doctors are remotely looking down on the bodies of Keith and Leonard who died in OD.)연출의도. 영화는 Keith가 병원 담당의사 앞에 도착한 장면으로 시작된다. 간단한 심사 후 Keith는 간호사에 의해 격리병동으로 옮겨지며 이곳에서 초췌한 Leonard가 등장한다. 간호사와 의사는 사회질서 권위의, Keith와 Leonard는 억눌린 젊음의 상징이다. Keith와 Leonard의 과거는 그들의 간결한 대화를 통해 밝혀짐으로 관객은 두 인물의 대화에 집중해야 한다. 그들의 탈출 후 병원 간호사는 Leonard의 전 정부로 다시 등장하며, 병원의사는 Leonard를 병원에 넣은 정부의 남편이자 Keith의 누이 혹은 연인 Lenore를 강간하려다 살해당하는 인물로 다시 등장한다. 이러한 인물설정은 사회질서 권위의 이중성을 효과적으로 상징하기 위한 의도로 사용되었다. Ash는 약(Drug)을 상징하는 인물이다. Keith와 Leonard가 Ash를 방문했을 때 그들은 함께 약물 과다 복용의 절정에 이른다. Ash의 집과 정신병원은 Keith와 Leonard에게 도피처를 제공하는 혹은 약에 취할 수 있는 유사한 공간의 기능을 한다. Lenore는 Keith의 누이라고 소개되지만 그녀가 인종이 다르다는 점과, 그들이 사랑을 나눈다는 것으로 연인이라는 느낌을 주는 인물이다. 각 인물은 모호한 정체성을 가지고 있다. 그러나 표면적으로 단순하게 젊은이들을 선인으로, 어른들을 악인으로 묘사한 이유는 첫째, 일반인들이 마약을 복용하는 것을 악처럼 취급하는 것에 대한 반발이고, 둘째로 사회질서에 갇혀 사는 젊은이들의 항변 같은 이유에서였다. 그러나 연출의도는 단순한 이분법적 도상화가 아니었다. 각 인물을 살펴본다면 Keith를 죽음으로 몰고 가는 Leonard가 악인일 수도 있고, 혹은 Ash와 Lenore는 쫓기고 있는 Keith와 Leonard를 더욱 위험으로 빠뜨리는 장애물일 수 잇다는 것을 발견할 것이다. 그러나 이 현실처럼 보이는 사건들이 결국 Keith와 Leonard가 약에 취해 보이는 환상이며 그 환상 속의 죽음이 다시 현실속의 사건이라는 결론 속에서 영화 속의 모호함을 설명해야 하는 주체는 바로 관객 자신이 된다. (The film starts with Keith and a doctor. After a few tests, Keith is taken to an isolation ward and there he meets haggard Leonard. While the nurse and the doctor are the symbol of social order and authority, Keith and Leonard are the symbol of oppressed youth. Their past is revealed through their brief conversation. After escaping from the hospital, one of the nurses appears as a Leonard’s client. The doctor is the husband whose wife sleeps with Leonard. The doctor is also the rapist who has attempted raping Lenore and then being killed by Keith. Ash symbolizes drugs. When Keith and Leonard visit him, they all drug out. The house of Ash and the mental hospital are similar in a sense that both places provide a hideout for drugs. All the characters have ambiguous identities. But on the surface, the youth are presented being the good, while the adults are the bad. The reason is that I wanted to repel against the prejudice against the drugs and wanted to speak for the young people who are kept by the social order. But my intention wasn’t anywhere near the simplistic dualism. If we look at the each character, things can be more complex -- Leonard can be the villain because he leads Keith to death.
