도철은, 중병으로 병원에 누워있는 아내를 오랫동안 간호해왔다. 어느 날 밤, 그는 우연히 병원 창문을 통해 골목에서 벌어진 살인사건을 목격한다. 살인자와 눈이 마주친 도철은 살인자에게 쫓겨서 미로처럼 얽힌 골목길을 정신 없이 달린다. 간신히 위기를 모면한 도철은 심야술집에 들어갔다가 한 창녀를 만나게 되고, 그 창녀와 시비가 붙는다. 시비 끝에 실수로 창녀를 죽이고 살인자가 되어 다시 정신 없이 미로 속을 헤매는 도철. 골목을 벗어나기 위해 밤새도록 헤매지만, 그에겐 출구가 보이지 않는다. 어느새 그는, 처음 살인사건을 목격했던 장소로 되돌아와 있는 자신을 발견하는데… (Do-cheol has been taking care of his sick wife for a long time. One night, through a hospital window, he witnesses a murder in an alley. As the murderer sees him, Do-cheol runs along the narrow side street, chased by the murderer. After he just manages to tide over crisis, he goes to a bar and has a quarrel with a prostitute. Accidentally he kills her. Do-cheol, now a murderer, loses his way in the side street. He finds himself where he witnessed the murder at the first place.) 연출의도. 이미 오래 전부터… 도시는 온기를 잃었다. 도시의 뒷골목엔 어둠과 불안, 불신의 벽이 높아만 간다. 인간은 끊임없는 폭력의 공포에 시달리는 동안 점점 무기력해져, 타인에 대해서는 적대적인 채, 스스로를 유폐시키고 있다. 이 이야기의 요체는 “폭력”이다. 폭력이 지배하는 사회에서 살아가는 어려움에 대한 이야기다. 나는, 한 남자에게 일어난 하룻밤의 상황을 객관적으로 추적함으로써, 한 개인이 목격한 물리적 폭력이 얼마나 쉽게 그 개인에게로 환원되는지를 보여주고 싶었다. 더 나아가, 폭력이 우리의 일상에 얼마나 깊이 잠재되어 있는지를, 그 폭력이 사람과 사람 사이의 관계를 어떻게 조장하고 단절시키는지를 보여주고 싶었다. 이 영화에 등장하는 우울한 도시의 밤 골목은, 여전히 한국사회의 한 단면을 닮아 있다. 그리고 여전히 내게는, 삶이 돌고 도는 현실로 점철된 무엇임을 환기시켜 준다. (A city’s been losing its life. What is left is darkness, fear, and distrust in the back street of the city. Humans are constantly threatened by the fear of violence, which makes them helpless but hostile to others. The film focuses on “violence”. It is a story about the difficulties of living in a society which is governed by violence. Following a man and his circumstances, I wanted to show how a physical violence that a person witnesses easily repeated by the person. I also wanted to portray how much violence is embedded in our lives and how it functions in between people. The gloomy alley of the city resembles a slice of the Korean society.)
